Collapse ▲During the camp, Officer Jordan Keyes from the NC Wildlife Resources Commission taught hunter safety to a group of campers. While some may think that hunter safety is only about firearms, it covers a wide range of topics such as ethics, responsibility, conservation, wildlife management, identification of animals, survival skills, first aid, specialty hunting, and tree stand safety.
After the campers received their book and lecture instructions, they took a test. Upon successfully passing the test, they were certified to go to the shooting range.
Officer Keyes led the campers to the range where they assisted in preparing it by hanging the backstop and their shooting targets. While the campers were setting up Captain Bryant with the Bertie County Sheriff’s Department stopped by to see if we needed anything. She took a few minutes to talk with the campers. Officer Keyes also brought a unique target for the campers to aim at – a dinosaur named Timmy Bo. The campers happily gave the target its name.
All the campers were given the opportunity to shoot the .22 Long Rifle from four different positions – prone, sitting, kneeling, and standing. It was impressive to see the campers hit their targets with such accuracy.
Next, the campers transitioned to using a bow and arrow. They all demonstrated a high level of proficiency with this weapon, hitting the archery target bag with ease and accuracy. However, the real challenge came when they aimed at Timmy Bo, the dinosaur target. The campers turned it into a game, trying to see who could hit Timmy Bo the most times. One camper even joked, “Miss Cindy, I’m bringing home some dino ribs!” Unfortunately, by the end of the session, poor Timmy Bo had accumulated quite a few imaginary medical bills.
At the end of our time at the range, Officer Keyes commended the campers for their excellent performance. She rewarded them with a patch and a gift certificate for a complimentary ice cream cone at Sonic.
